Glock 19x With Safety - New for the start of 2018, the Glock 19X (G19X) Crossover, available this week, is a hybrid combination of the 5th generation Glock 19 (G19) Slide and Glock 17 (G17) frame. The G19X is not compatible with US Army standards for their single-gun Modular Handgun System (MHS) competition and is now available to the civilian market. The military test version should have a thumb guard, while the civilian version does not. I'm glad Glock sent me one early to review and test, and I want to share my thoughts with you.

Many have asked "Why" is the connection between G19 and G17 necessary? Many are wondering out loud "What is the purpose of this hybrid gun?" Overall, I believe the principle behind this new combo is to make a pistol that fills multiple roles and has the advantage of the G17's long grip size for better control and the availability of a 17 round magazine. This is combined with improved accuracy, a shorter barrel and slide for concealed carry, and a Gen 5 G19 grip. However, not all Gen 5 features are included, as explained below.

I would like to objectively analyze the pros and cons of the G19X and shoot and evaluate it myself and give you some information. I hope my process, thoughts, reviews, and ratings will help you decide on a gun and how you will use it. Of course, any choice of gun depends on your own style, thoughts, preferences, and how you handle and shoot it.

First, I'll give you my ten points for evaluating the G19X crossover. Next, I will introduce the specifications and features of the G19X. I will then rate it against each of my ten quality scenarios and then give you my final thoughts, practical tips and recommendations on the G19X.

In my latest book, "Gun Info & Handgun Basics," I carefully review, compare, and rank my top 21 9mm pistols, including the G19. You can read my detailed comparison and below are my thoughts on the G19X. I want to say up front that I am not on Glock's payroll, I was not paid for this review, for my opinion, and do not interfere to say anything about this gun or any of their or anyone's merchandise. Read on to find out if I recommend the G19X.

These are just 10 of my standards and factors that I use to evaluate all firearms, so I will apply them to the G19X. In addition to my system, there are other details that some may be interested in, such as style, magazine placement, action, caliber, shape, number of magazines included, type of scope/adjustment, bore axis, rail, grip angle, not port or port, including with extras like bag and bag, customer service, etc. So I combined them in the previous rating. I have to admit that ALL weapon selection decisions are business, but I want all of my processes to be consistent. I fired about 225 rounds at the range with the G19X for an initial test. I shoot a variety of quality Sig Sauer V-Crown 115 grain JHP (1185 fps muzzle velocity, 359 ft lbs muzzle energy), Sig Sauer Elite Performance 115 grain FMJ (1185 fps muzzle velocity, 359 fl lbs muzzle energy) and Sig Sauer V-Crown 124 grain JHP (1165 fps muzzle velocity, 374 ft lbs muzzle energy) ammo. I also bought and shot about 100 rounds of Blazer Brass 124 lis FMJ (1090 fps muzzle velocity, 327 ft lbs muzzle energy.)

Shooting a lot of this JHP and FMJ ammo has confirmed to me that this G19X can make a difference between bullet weights and ammo types, especially hollow points. I usually shoot 500 rounds over a few days to help make a gun decision, but I had the information I needed after shooting about 225 rounds. I will shoot more to confirm the original assessment. Below are my ratings for each of my ten methods. I have had no malfunctions or jams and have tested the gun with both JHP and FMJ ammo. I would like to thank Sig Sauer for providing their premium V-Crown JHP and their Elite Performance FMJ cartridges for the testing and evaluation of this Glock 19X Crossover 9mm pistol. Also thanks to my wife for giving me the money to buy Blazer Brass test ammo.

At first I had questions as to whether this full size G17 frame and G19 compact slide would work well together in the 19X. Others say it's just back to what a concealed carry weapon should be. This requires a compact G19 frame/holder and a long G17 slide, primarily to prevent printing and for added visibility. From my perspective and opinion, there is no doubt that this gun is not intended for concealed carry. (Not that it can't be a concealed weapon for some people.) But it was designed as a combat, dangerous weapon for the military and police... . Even Glock VP Josh Dorsey said:

"The 19X was designed for the military and is an everyday pistol that will do what you need, when you need it; every time, in every situation."

When I first held this hybrid pistol, I was very impressed with how good and stable it felt in my hand. Shooting is easy and I'm good at it. The G17's long, stable, full-sized grip and frame size helped me feel the recoil and muzzle spin. Also, my non-Gen 5 G17 subscribers fit this G19X perfectly, with no interference or performance issues. Note that Gen 5 subscribers will not fit the G19X magwell. The G19 size short helped me start quickly and stop at the finish line. The lack of finger grooves on the shoulder strap is irrelevant to me and my average hand. It also has a rough texture frame Gen 5. I love the large 17 round capacity... and the 19 round with two extended 19 round magazines. The G19X's new nDLC finish on the barrel and nPVD (Nitrated Base Physical Vapor Disposition) finish on the slide seemed durable and look good to me, along with the new Coyote (Tan) Color model. The PVD finish provides high corrosion resistance with surface friction and a hardness better than 80 on the Rockwell hardness scale. This means reduced maintenance in most cases.

It comes with slide stop levers that move on both hands, a lanyard loop (which can be removed if needed) and a reversible magnet release, but I rarely use them, although some do. A lanyard loop that is considered security can help, but it really acts as an insert on the back of the frame, like a plug to keep debris out. The G19X does not have an external fuse, which is fine for the shooter and me. It comes with two extra modular backstraps and two beaver tails so you can customize your grip with or without the beaver tail.

Perhaps the most important thing to me about the G19X is the sharp and smooth effect of the Gen 5, like the Glock 17 Gen 5 I reviewed here earlier. The Gen 5 trigger has an adjustable trigger, an adjustable spring assembly, and a double locking pin assembly. The Gen 5 safety piston has been redesigned to allow for smoother compression. Even the spark plug has been changed to a different tear for the Gen 5s to prevent debris and debris in the spark plug channel, reducing the risk of light filler attack. I love the dual recoil springs and the nice tritium Glock night sights that come standard. These are reflected in the premium price.

I believe the overall ergonomics of the G19X and the optional beavertail backstrap help offset the apparent recoil and muzzle flip. Personally, due to my large hands and my personal orientation, I shoot many types of rifles, 1911s, etc., I still have personal concerns (good or bad, different) with the 22 degree beveled grip angle. (compared to the 18 degree grip angle on a 1911 or others.) It's common for me to have to bend my wrist and push lower with some Glocks so I won't fire, and that's my learning and problem solving. "Natural" has different perspectives of people. For example, the G43 I reviewed here has a good non-height angle.

Glock 19x With Extended Clip - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA –-()- In the first part of this series, we took the standard 9mm Glock and prepared it specifically for home defense. For part two, we'll start with something a little more modern and spend extra to turn it up to eleven.

After recommending the AlphaWolf barrel, I'm sure many of you have seen this addition. I'm actually a big fan of sound suppressors. Especially in a potential home defense scenario. In our previous article, I recommend that shooters stick to OEM magazines and OEM base plate extensions. This is still very solid advice; most extended stacks are not very reliable. One very notable exception is those made by KRISS USA.
